(P/5')(FS) Z4-8 There are between 60 and 130 species of solidago having for centuries been the inspiration for legends and superstitions. A long-standing misconception is that goldenrod causes hay fever. The pollen of this herb is too heavy and moist to blow around. It is carried by bees - the culprit is probably ragweed. The Europeans use goldenrod as an ornamental in their gardens as well as in many medicinal remedies. Its astringent properties make it valuable in salves for wounds, sores and insect bites. Native Americans made an infusion of flowers and leaves for fevers and chest pains, others used the leaves as a poultice to relieve pain of rheumatism and neuralgia. The Hopi and Navajo Indians as well as the Pennsylvania Dutch prized goldenrod as a dye source. The leaves and flowers produce a wide range of yellows, golds and greens.
