(P/1')(SH/PS) Like Ginseng, this herb has also been over harvested in the wild making it hard to find in its native habitat in the damp shady forests of North America. Goldenseal was used by the American Indians as a dye and as a medicine. It is effective in treating inflammations of the mucous membranes. The name hydrastis comes from the Greek meaning water-acting after its effect on them. It also has astringent and anti-biotic properties. Excessive amounts taken internally can be harmful.

Growing instructions: Plant bareroot medicinal perennials upright so that the crown (the part with a bud, opposite the roots) is in inch or so below the soil level. Water them in. If planting in spring, you should start to see growth in a week or two. If planting in fall, they will stay dormant until conditions are right in the spring. 

If you are unable to plant to bareroots right away, refrigerate them and keep them moist or plant in pots. 

Never freeze bareroots.
