St. John's Wort Seeds
Hypericum perforatum
The Greeks named it hypericon meaning "above an icon" since it supposedly had magical properties. The smell was believed to be strong enough to drive away evil spirits and purify the air. It was known as 'the herb of St. John' since it is in full bloom on St. John's Day (June 24th). When the yellow flowers are crushed they turn red, possibly relating to the blood at St. John's beheading. This herb does have real medicinal uses though; its calming properties are used to treat bedwetting, insomnia and other nervous conditions. Aids healing of wounds and burns. The leaves were once used as a salad herb. We also sell this as a dried bulk herb and include it in both our healing salve and arnica salve. To make a tea: Steep 1 teaspoon dried St. John's Wort in 1/2 cup water for 5 minutes covered. Strain and enjoy. Caution: St. John's Wort may make the skin sensitive to light. It is also contraindicated for those on blood thinners, blood pressure medication or certain antidepressants. Check with your doctor before using this herb.
