Description and Uses: Aromatic herb with a strong licorice flavor. Anise came to the United States in the 18th century when, according to law, each settler to Virginia had to bring and plant six Anise seeds, early Romans valued it as a condiment, cough supressant, poison antidote, and digestive aid. The 11th century English sweetened their beds with anise sachets. Today it is used in making breads, cookies, and cakes.
Seed Germinating Tips: Anise does not transplant well. Direct sow in early spring as soon as ground can be worked. Space roughly nine inches apart.
