Ashwagandha Seed - Withania somnifera
Description and Uses: Ashwagandha is a very important herb in Ayurvedic medicine, used as a strengthening tonic for general weakness, rheumatism, insomnia, infertility, impotence and "weakness of the mind." Ashwagandha has adaptogenic properties and helps sheild the body from stress. In Africa the bark from the root is used as a sedative. Sometimes referred to as 'Indian Ginseng.'
Seed Germinating Tips: Start indoors to regulate moisture, temperature and light. Barely cover seeds with soil, spray with water, and cover to retain moisture. Transplant outdoors after true leaves have formed. Harden off plants in a sheltered location for one week to reduce shock.
Ashwagandha likes well drained soil, full sun and mild winters. In the Northwest, there are some years it's too cold and damp to overwinter, but most years it does come back. For yards with less drainage, it makes a nice container plant with blue-green leaves and interesting red berries in fall.
