Berberis aquifolium
Native to Oregon and British Columbia, it was introduced to Europe in 1823 and is often grown for its attractive foliage and fruit. Oregon Grape contains the alkaloid berberine, as does barberry and goldenseal. It has a considerable reputation as a blood purifier, cleansing the tissues and blood of toxins and waste products. Its bitter compounds are a stimulant to the liver and gall bladder, tonic to the digestion and mildly laxative. It is also used for skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, acne and cold sores.
